THE PHILOSOPHICAL CONSULTATION

Want more clarity in your own thinking?

Do you have a question, a choice to make, a difficulty that keeps coming back, or a situation you can no longer think through clearly? A philosophical consultation is a one-hour individual dialogue to examine your problem, your reasoning, your assumptions and your contradictions.

The aim is not to hand you a solution, but to help you see more clearly what you actually think — and what may be keeping you from moving forward.

WHAT CAN YOU COME WITH?

People rarely arrive with the right question.

You don’t need a perfectly formulated question: part of the consultation is discovering what the real question is.

HOW DOES A CONSULTATION WORK?

Come with a question.

A consultation is not only about talking about yourself: it is about examining your own way of thinking.

01

Dialogue

You come with a question, a difficulty or a situation you want to examine. The dialogue lasts about an hour.

02

Examine

I ask questions to clarify what you are claiming, define the terms you use, identify your assumptions and spot any contradictions.

03

Put to the test

I may offer an objection, a counter-example, or ask you to consider another way of framing the problem.

WHAT IT IS

Neither therapy,
nor coaching.

It’s a work of thinking.

A philosophical consultation is not psychotherapy: it does not seek to establish a diagnosis. Nor is it coaching: I am not trying to lead you towards a predefined goal, or to give you a method for succeeding.

The work is on your thinking: what you claim, what you assume, the criteria you use and the way you frame your problem. The consultation does not aim directly for a therapeutic effect, even if clarification can bring a sense of well-being.

CONFIDENTIALITY

What is said in a session stays in the session.

Consultations are confidential.

A session may occasionally be recorded where there is a teaching value, or so that you can look back on the work — and only with your explicit consent. Recording is never required: declining changes nothing about how the session runs.

SEE THE PRACTICE

Filmed consultations.

These excerpts, published with the consent of the people involved, show the questioning, hesitations and shifts that happen in a real dialogue. (In French.)

Pourquoi je perds mon identité ?

Pourquoi ai-je peur du manque ?

Faut-il être carriériste ?

Pourquoi ai-je besoin d’être la meilleure ?

WHO AM I?

Laurence Bouchet

A philosophical practitioner and former philosophy teacher, I have been practising philosophical consultation, dialogue workshops and training in philosophical practice for more than fifteen years.

My method draws on Socratic maieutics: questioning rather than advising, examining rather than reassuring, so that thinking becomes more aware of how it works.
